The Makita XPH012 is an interesting newcomer, a cordless hammer drill/driver. The price is very reasonable, the size is small and the drill is lightweight. Is it too good to be true?

First we should make it clear that the Makita XPH012 is a powerful drill for its size. It weights only 4 pounds, including the battery but has plenty of punch. The Makita XPH012 is also a very versatile tool, it can be used as a driver, drill and hammer drill. But it is not as powerful as large mains powered hammer drills.

Like all good drills, the Makita XPH012 has a keyless chunk, belt clip and built-in LED work light. Variable speed with two speed ranges (0-400 & 0-1,500 RPM) makes it suitable for a wide range of drilling, driving and hammer drilling applications.

The Genesis GCD18BK is a cheap cordless drill which is capable of handling most tasks around the house. But if you need a drill that is capable of handling demanding jobs, then you should look for a more expensive drill.

You get excellent value for your money, the drill comes with battery, battery charger, hard plastic carrying case, and 13 drill & driver bits. It has a built-in LED light, 16 Position torque/clutch settings and a keyless chuck. It has a reversing switch so you can use it also for driving screws. An additional features are the bubble level, to help you keep the drill level during drilling, and the magnetic bit tray.

The 18V Ni-Cad battery makes the drill relatively powerful but not as powerful as top-end drills. The battery does hold charge for a reasonably time but not as long as good Lithium-ion batteries. All in all, the Genesis GCD18BK is a good basic drill. Given the cheap price, you get excellent value for the money.
